STAVE HILL ECOLOGICAL PARK

After London’s former docklands were transformed in the 1980s, Stave Hill was created with the waste from the site. Over time, it has developed into 5.2 acres of park overlooking Russia Wood (named after the dock which used to see delivery of goods from Russia). As well as woodland, the ecological park has been carefully maintained to conserve the large variety of flora and fauna found there. Birdwatchers can spot the usual blue tits, robins and blackbirds, while the odd kingfisher and parakeet can be seen fluttering among the trees. A sculpture by Michael Rizzello displays a map of the old dockyards cast in a bronze relief. When it rains, the channels of the map fill with water so they look like little rivers on top of the stone pillar.
